Job Description – Mainframe COBOL Programmer (Hybrid – Onsite / Remote)

The position will be responsible for designing and creating specifications from business requirement documents, work with the business analyst to create test scripts to test the requirement, assist other application developers to code the requirement, create code from specifications, unit test code, support system and user testing, debug abends, research defects, update / create technical documentation, and support implementation.

The position will also be in a rotation that is responsible for on call support on a 24×7 basis with other team members.  The position is currently hybrid (2 Days onsite the the clients world headquarters in Akron, OH and up to 3 days work from home).  This is subject to change in the future based on business request or/ or business needs.

Required Skills and Knowledge – Mainframe COBOL Programmer (Hybrid – Onsite / Remote)

  • Code, debug and support business application software with a focus on COBOL in an IBM Mainframe environment.
  • Analyze end-user and usability requirements.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Developers, Business Analysts and Quality Assurance Analysts.
  • Participate in code/design reviews and/or paired programming
  • Excellent analytical, communication, organizational and problem-solving skills coupled with a strong work ethic
  • Ability to translate business requirements into functional requirements documentation.
  • Experience with development, deployment, and support of large-scale distributed applications in a production environment.
  • Test-infected attitude (strong desire to perform thorough and exhaustive unit, integration and system testing).
  • TELON, DB2, and CICS experience is a plus
  • Experience with the IBM mainframe and TSO
  • Good personal computer and business solutions software skills
  • Analytical and problem solving skills for design, creation and testing of programs
  • Ability to work as part of team and independently
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with team members
  • Communication skills to work effectively with team members, support personnel, and clients
  • Design and write program specifications for enhancements based on consultations with supervisors, project leaders, analysts, other programmers, and end-users while assuming all responsibility for successful implementation.
  • Answer technical and procedural questions for less experienced team members
  • Convert designs and specifications into computer code.
  • Create unit test transactions and execute unit tests to find errors and confirm program meets specifications.
  • Analyze code to find errors and revise programs to resolve issues and for system enhancements.
  • Modify and maintain software programs written by others.
  • Provide technical assistance by responding to inquiries regarding errors, problems, or questions with programs.

Education and Experience – Mainframe COBOL Programmer (Hybrid – Onsite / Remote)

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in related discipline or equivalent Development work (preferred)
  • 4+ years’ experience with full development lifecycle from inception through implementation.
  • 5+ years’ experience with COBOL
  • 2+ years’ experience with File Master or similar package
  • 3+ years’ experience working with IMS databases
  • 4+ years’ experience working with JCL
  • 3+ years’ experience designing systems or writing specifications
  • Functional work experience or IT support work experience in the specific business/technical process area (2-year minimum for either)
  • Functional work experience or IT work experience with specific IT technology is desired
