AI Isn’t Shrinking the Contingent Workforce. It May Be Growing It.
Despite widespread fears that AI will eliminate jobs, new research from Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) suggests it may do the opposite and boost demand for contingent workers.
What the Data Shows
In SIA’s North American Staffing Executive Outlook 2026, a survey of more than 300 staffing executives, 29% expect AI to increase demand for contingent talent. Just 16% expect a decline.
Two factors are driving that optimism:
- Headcount caution. Employers are hesitant to add full-time staff while AI reshapes their operations.
- Task-based work. AI makes it easier to break roles into discrete tasks, which suits flexible, variable-cost talent.
The Takeaway
For the staffing industry, AI looks more like an opportunity than a threat. Firms that invest in both technology and their people will be best positioned to meet growing demand for flexible talent.
